Handwritten artwork on ivory handmade paper: The caregiver needs care too.

A Prayer for the Caregiver Who Is Running Out of Strength

Caregiving can make one person responsible for needs that do not pause.

There may be appointments, medication, paperwork, meals, transportation, interrupted sleep, difficult decisions, and the emotional work of staying steady for someone else.

Galatians 6 calls believers to carry one another’s burdens. That command belongs to the whole church, not only to the person closest to the need. In Mark 6, Jesus also recognizes that people who serve need rest.

A prayer for the caregiver

Father, You see the work no one else sees.

Give this caregiver wisdom for today’s decisions, patience for repeated needs, and courage to ask for help. Provide rest that is more than a few stolen minutes.

Send people who will offer specific help and follow through. Let meals, transportation, errands, phone calls, respite, and quiet companionship become expressions of Your care.

Protect this caregiver from believing that exhaustion is the measure of love. Give permission to rest, receive care, and name what is no longer sustainable.

Be merciful to the person receiving care. Give skill and attention to those making medical decisions. Keep everyone involved anchored in truth and surrounded by faithful community.

Amen.

One way to help

Do not say only, “Let me know if you need anything.” Offer something concrete: a meal on Tuesday, two hours of respite, a pharmacy pickup, a school run, or one phone call handled from beginning to end.

The person carrying the burden should not have to carry it alone.
