Biblical Forgiveness Does Not Mean Pretending Harm Was Harmless
Forgiveness is sometimes described in ways that ask an injured person to minimize what happened, restore trust immediately, or remain available to someone who is unsafe.
That is not a faithful picture of biblical forgiveness.
Ephesians 4 calls Christians to put away bitterness, rage, malice, and revenge, and to forgive as God has forgiven us in Christ. Romans 12 tells believers not to repay evil for evil. Neither passage asks us to rename evil as good.
Forgiveness tells the truth
Forgiveness begins with an honest account of what needs forgiving. It does not erase consequences, prevent reporting, or require silence. It does not make repentance unnecessary.
Forgiveness and reconciliation are related, but different
Forgiveness can be offered before another person changes. Reconciliation requires truth, repentance, and the rebuilding of trust. Trust may return slowly. In some situations, wisdom requires lasting boundaries.
Forgiveness releases revenge to God
Romans 12 places justice in God’s hands and calls Christians away from personal vengeance. This does not forbid lawful accountability. It frees us from making retaliation our master.
A prayer
Father, You know what happened and what it cost.
Help me tell the truth without being ruled by hatred. Give me wisdom about boundaries, accountability, and any step toward reconciliation. Protect those who are vulnerable.
Teach me to release revenge to You without pretending harm was harmless. Keep me close to Jesus, who is full of grace and truth.
Amen.
