Gratitude When Life Still Feels Hard
Gratitude can feel complicated when the year has been hard.
Maybe there is an empty chair. A diagnosis. A relationship that changed. A prayer that still feels unanswered. Being told to “just be grateful” can sound less like comfort and more like a request to hide what hurts.
But biblical thanksgiving does not require denial.
The Psalms often hold lament and praise in the same prayer. Scripture gives us room to say, “This hurts,” and “God is still faithful.” Both can be true.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV)
Notice that Scripture does not call every circumstance good. It calls us to remember God within them.
So gratitude in a hard season may be small and honest: Thank You for the friend who called. Thank You for today’s strength. Thank You that Jesus has not left me. Thank You for one ordinary mercy I can see.
You do not need to force a silver lining onto suffering. You can grieve what is broken and still receive what is good.
This Thanksgiving, let gratitude be truthful rather than polished.
