What We Want Our Children to Remember at Christmas
Our children will not remember every Christmas the way we do.
They may forget which gifts were under the tree, what we served for dinner, whether the wrapping paper matched, or which year the lights stopped working halfway across the house.
But repetition leaves traces.
What we return to year after year can quietly become part of what they understand Christmas to mean.
So it is worth asking: what do we hope they remember?
We want them to remember that Christmas begins with God’s generosity, not ours.
We want them to know that Jesus was not simply a baby in a beautiful story. He is Savior and King.
We want them to know that God keeps His promises, even when people wait longer than they expected.
We want them to connect celebration with generosity, because receiving grace makes us people who give.
We want them to know that our homes do not have to be perfect for Jesus to be welcomed there.
And we want them to remember joy.
Not manufactured happiness. Not pressure to make every moment magical. The deeper joy of good news: a Savior has come.
Family traditions can help carry those truths. Read Luke 2 every Christmas morning. Pray before opening gifts. Choose someone to bless together. Keep a nativity where little hands can touch it. Sing the same hymn. Tell the story again.
None of those things earn faith for our children. We cannot manufacture belief through tradition.
But we can faithfully put truth in their path again and again.
Years from now, when many details have blurred, perhaps what remains will be simple:
In our house, Christmas was beautiful because Jesus came.
