Josiah Hears God's Word and Responds
When Josiah heard the Book of the Law read aloud, he recognized the seriousness of what it said. The king responded with grief over disobedience and sent people to inquire of the Lord.
your heart was responsive
(2 Kings 22:19, NIV, excerpt)
Second Kings 22 describes the recovery of the book and Josiah’s response. Through the prophet Huldah, God confirms His judgment against Judah’s unfaithfulness and acknowledges Josiah’s humility. The account gives weight to hearing God’s word with a responsive heart.
Let what you read call for a response
Read Scripture with room for it to address your life. Ask God to help you understand before deciding how to apply it.
When a passage brings conviction, name the issue honestly in prayer. Turn to Jesus for forgiveness and help to obey.
Ask a faithful teacher or church leader for guidance where understanding is difficult. Josiah’s response included seeking the Lord rather than dismissing the seriousness of the word he heard.
Choose one appropriate step that follows from the passage. Keep the response rooted in its meaning, and ask someone trustworthy to encourage you as you follow through.
A prayer
Lord, make our hearts responsive to Your word. Give us understanding, humility, and courage to repent where we have sinned. Through Jesus, teach us to hear faithfully and to live in loving obedience. Amen.
