A little checking now makes choosing easier.
Fit varies by style, fabric and construction. The individual product page is the best source for the garment you are considering, rather than a single size rule for everything in the shop.
Start with that listing's size options, fit notes and any measurements provided. Need a detail that is not there? Ask us before ordering.
How to choose a size
1. Start with the exact style
Check the garment name, maker, available sizes and intended fit. Do not use one style's fit notes as a size chart for another.
2. Compare the details provided
Use any product-specific measurements and fit guidance in the listing. When garment measurements are provided, compare them with a similar garment that currently fits well, measuring in the same way.
3. Consider the fabric and care instructions
Fabric and construction affect fit. Cotton can change with washing, so follow the care guidance for the exact piece instead of assuming every material behaves alike.
4. Ask before choosing between sizes
Send the product link, the sizes you are considering and the specific fit question. We will help with the information we have for that style. Follow the garment's intended fit and label instructions rather than automatically sizing up.
Compare with a garment that fits now
Use a similar style, lay it flat, and smooth it without stretching. Compare only measurements taken the same way as those on the product page.
- Chest width: measure straight across from underarm to underarm. This is a flat width, not the full chest circumference.
- Waist width: measure straight across the waistband while it rests unstretched.
- Inseam: measure from the crotch seam to the end of the leg on a footless garment.
For footed pieces or any measurement with unclear start and end points, ask us about the exact style. A garment measurement and a child's body measurement are different; do not compare them as if they were the same.
Practical details vary by piece
Fabric and construction
Many Modern Burlap apparel styles use GOTS certified organic cotton and tagless construction. Thermal pieces, lightweight layers and rompers are built for different uses. Check each listing for its exact materials and features.
Baby details in larger sizes
On applicable styles, fold-over hands or foot grips continue into larger baby sizing, including up to 18 to 24 months. Other styles are intentionally footless, footed, zipped, buttoned or snapped.
Made to mix
Much of the Organic Wardrobe is unisex. Solids and signature prints are chosen to work across pieces, siblings and seasons instead of requiring a separate outfit for every item.
Not every feature appears on every garment. Sizing on many baby styles continues through 18 to 24 months, and some pieces extend well beyond that. Use the individual listing for the piece you are choosing.
Shopping for a gift or another maker's label?
For a gift, it helps to know the recipient's current size and the season when the garment will be worn. When that information is unavailable, ask us about the particular style before deciding.
For pieces in Labels We Love, follow the product listing and that maker's sizing guidance. Do not assume its sizing matches Modern Burlap's own wardrobe.
