Beginning a New Year With a Willing Heart

Before the calendar fills, there is room for a simple prayer: Lord, teach me. A new year can begin with attention to the One we want to follow and the people He calls us to love.

Teach me to do your will,

Psalm 143 is David’s prayer for mercy and help under pressure. He acknowledges his need before God, remembers His works, and asks for guidance. His request to learn God’s will grows from trust and dependence.

Choose a practice that helps you listen and respond

Read the whole psalm slowly. Notice how David brings his need to God and asks to be taught. Let that posture shape your own prayer.

Choose one realistic way to give Scripture your attention. You might read a Gospel alongside someone from church or discuss a Sunday passage with your family.

Consider one area where obedience needs your care: truthful words, generosity, reconciliation, or consistent attention to someone you have overlooked.

Ask a trusted Christian to pray with you as you begin. Check in with each other about what you are learning and where you need help. Let the next season include the grace of growing together.

A prayer

Lord, teach us to do Your will. Through Jesus, forgive us and lead us in Your truth. Give us willing hearts, steady attention to Scripture, and practical love for the people around us. Help us begin this year in dependence on You. Amen.
