Remembering God's Mercy at the End of a Year
An end-of-year reflection can hold more than one feeling. There may be gifts you want to remember, questions still open, and people you want to bring before God. You can pray with all of it.
for his compassions never fail.
(Lamentations 3:22, NIV, excerpt)
Lamentations 3 speaks of remembered affliction and a downcast soul before recalling the Lord’s love and compassion. Hope arises within the lament as the speaker turns toward God’s faithfulness and waits for Him.
Look back with honesty and gratitude
Set aside a few quiet minutes with a Bible and a blank page. Write down particular gifts you can thank God for: a kind conversation, a lesson, a shared meal, or help received.
Then name what still needs prayer. Let your words be plain. You can ask for wisdom, comfort, forgiveness, courage, or support from other believers.
Consider whether there is someone to thank or a relationship that needs your careful attention. Take one appropriate step in love.
As the year closes, entrust what remains unfinished to Jesus. His grace invites you to draw near with both gratitude and need, and to keep seeking Him in the days ahead.
A prayer
Faithful God, thank You for Your enduring compassion. Receive our gratitude and the concerns we still carry. Forgive our sins through Jesus, guide our next steps, and help us care for one another as this year comes to an end. Amen.
