A Prayer at the Beginning of Retirement
Retirement can change the shape of a week and the way a person understands their role. It can also become a moment to pray about the relationships, worship, and care that will fill this next season.
They will still bear fruit in old age,
(Psalm 92:14, NIV, excerpt)
Psalm 92 praises the Lord’s faithfulness and pictures righteous people as trees planted in His presence. Its closing verses include older people in the image of fruitfulness and in the continued proclamation of God’s upright character.
Begin with gratitude and attentive prayer
Thank God for the people, learning, and opportunities connected to the work that is ending. Mark that history honestly, with appreciation for the good you received.
Consider your present capacity and commitments as you think about what comes next. Make room for rest, relationships, learning, and appropriate ways to serve.
Speak with people in your church about shared life in this season. You may be able to offer encouragement or experience, and you may also welcome practical support or company.
Ask Jesus to guide the way you use your attention. Faithful love can take many ordinary forms: a conversation, a prayer, a thoughtful visit, or a task carried with care.
A prayer
Lord, guide those beginning retirement with gratitude and wisdom. Help them remain rooted in worship and caring relationships. Through Jesus, shape this season with faithful love, meaningful support, and thoughtful opportunities to serve. Amen.
