Product Standards + Responsible Production

Thoughtful products start long before a print or verse is added. For years, Modern Burlap has approached our own product development with written expectations for materials, construction, workplace responsibility, environmental care, business integrity, and quality.

This page shares the principles behind that work without pretending every product, production partner, or third-party brand is identical. For the exact material, certification, care, and construction of a specific piece, the product listing is the source of truth.

Designed with a reason

We ask what a product needs to do in real life, then make choices around fabric, weight, sizing, closures, finishes, colors, and details accordingly. That is why you will see different fabric weights for different uses, practical zipper and access choices, extended baby sizing, tagless construction where applicable, and colors and prints designed to work together rather than stand alone for one season.

Materials and certifications

Many Modern Burlap baby textiles and apparel have been made with certified organic cotton, including GOTS certified products where the individual listing states it. We use certification language specifically rather than applying one claim to an entire store or category.

Expectations for production partners

Modern Burlap established written expectations for business and production partners covering safe and lawful working conditions, fair treatment, wages and hours, the prohibition of forced and child labor, respect and non-discrimination, responsible environmental practices, chemical and waste considerations, transparency, subcontracting, and ethical business conduct.

Those standards also addressed conflicts of interest, bribery and improper payments, accurate business records, confidentiality, and compliance with applicable law. The point was simple: how something is made matters alongside what is made.

Quality is part of the process

Our product-development history includes technical sizing work, construction revisions, fabric requests, samples, and product testing. Details were reviewed and corrected when something was not right. On one documented historical Modern Burlap swaddle production sample, third-party testing included wash performance, fiber identification, lead, and phthalate testing. That report applies to the specific sample tested, not every current product. We would rather be precise about what was tested than turn one report into a blanket claim.

Modern Burlap originals and Labels We Love

These standards describe the philosophy and historical production expectations behind products made under the Modern Burlap name. Labels We Love includes thoughtfully selected products from other makers, whose materials, certifications, production practices, and origins are their own. We do not automatically apply Modern Burlap manufacturing claims to another brand’s product.

What you can expect from us

We will make specific claims when we can support them, keep product details as accurate as possible, and update information when better records become available. We would rather tell you exactly what we know about a product than stretch a good story beyond the facts.
