Helping Siblings Treat Each Other With Honor

Siblings know how to find each other’s favorite things and tender spots. Home gives children many chances to practice kindness, and it gives parents many chances to teach it again with patience.

Honor one another above yourselves.

(Romans 12:10, NIV, excerpt)

Romans 12 describes sincere love among God’s people. Paul joins devotion and honor with rejecting evil, holding to good, serving the Lord, and meeting one another’s needs. Honor is expressed in the way believers value and care for each other.

Make honor visible at home

We can help children apply that care within family life. Explain honor in words they understand: “Your brother or sister matters to God, and the way we treat each other should show care.”

Choose one practical habit to work on. It might be asking before borrowing, letting someone finish speaking, or returning a treasured item gently. Demonstrate the habit and practice it together.

When conflict happens, hear each child’s account and address the behavior clearly. Help them name what needs repair and make an age-appropriate plan. Adults can model responsibility through their own apologies and respectful words.

Notice progress specifically: “You stopped and asked whether she wanted help.” These small observations can make the lesson concrete.

Bring the day’s relationships before Jesus in prayer. A family can keep learning to practice honor together, one ordinary interaction at a time.

A prayer

Lord Jesus, teach our family to honor one another. Give us patience in conflict, humility to make repairs, and eyes to notice each person’s needs. Help our children grow in sincere love. Amen.
