A Prayer for a Patient Reply
A sharp reply can be ready before we have even finished listening. In that small space between hearing and answering, we can ask the Lord to help us choose words that serve the person in front of us.
A gentle answer turns away wrath,
(Proverbs 15:1, NIV, excerpt)
Proverbs 15 contrasts gentle and harsh answers, wise and foolish speech, and words that nourish or crush. These sayings teach the character of wise communication under God’s watchful care. Gentleness is a way of treating another person with dignity while speaking honestly.
Choose the first sentence with care
Following Jesus reaches into our ordinary replies. When someone sounds impatient, one possible beginning is, “I want to understand what is troubling you.” When a request needs a clear limit, a calm answer can still be direct.
Try lowering the speed of your response. Let the other person finish. If you need time, say so plainly and agree on when to return to the conversation. Thoughtful pauses can make room for better listening.
You may remember a reply you wish you could take back. A simple apology can begin repair: name the words, acknowledge their impact, and take responsibility. God’s wisdom gives us something useful to practice in the very next conversation.
A prayer
Jesus, help me answer with patience today. Give me truthful words, a gentle tone, and the humility to apologize when I have spoken carelessly. Teach me to care for the person receiving my reply. Amen.
