A Prayer Before Opening Your Bible

Before you open your Bible, you can pause long enough to ask God for help. Whether the passage is familiar or entirely new, there is room to approach it with curiosity, reverence, and a heart ready to learn.

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

(Psalm 119:18, NIV)

In Psalm 119:18–24, the writer asks to understand God’s instruction and expresses a deep longing for it. Even while facing contempt, he finds delight and counsel in God’s words. Understanding and obedience belong together in this prayerful attention to Scripture.

Read slowly enough to notice

Choose a short passage and read the surrounding paragraph too. Ask who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what is happening. Notice what the passage reveals about God before deciding how to apply it.

You might write down one clear truth and one honest question. Read the passage again. If something remains difficult, a reliable study resource or a mature teacher in your church can help you keep learning.

As Christians, we read with attention to the Bible’s unfolding witness to Jesus. Look for how the passage fits within that larger story of God’s saving work.

Finish with a response that grows from what you read: thanks, confession, a request for help, or a specific act of obedience. A few attentive minutes can give your day a meaningful beginning.

A prayer

Father, help me understand Your Word. Give me patience to read carefully, humility to learn, and willingness to obey. Lead me to know Jesus more truly and to love others more faithfully. Amen.
