A Prayer for the First Day of School

The first day of school can hold excitement and nerves at the same time. A child may be ready for the backpack and still wonder where they will sit, who will notice them, or whether the day will feel safe.

Joshua 1:9 connects courage with God’s presence. Courage is not pretending we are never afraid. It is taking the next step while remembering we do not go alone.

A prayer for the first day

Jesus, go with this child. Give them courage for unfamiliar rooms, wisdom when choices come quickly, and kindness that notices someone else. Help them ask for help when they need it. Give their teachers patience and good judgment. Bring trustworthy people around them. When the day is wonderful, teach them gratitude. When it is hard, help them tell the truth and remember that one difficult day does not define the whole year. Amen.

Ask one simple question after school: “When did you feel most like yourself today?” Then listen before asking the next one.
