Learning to Take the Lower Seat
In a group, it is easy to start measuring where we stand. Who was invited first? Whose opinion received attention? Where is there room for us? Jesus offers a different way to enter the room.
those who humble themselves will be exalted.

At a meal, Jesus noticed guests choosing places of honor. He told a parable about taking the lower place and leaving honor in the host’s hands. He then urged His host to welcome people who could not repay the invitation. His teaching joins humility with generous hospitality and turns our attention toward God’s judgment and reward.
Make room for another person
Humility can become visible in ordinary, quiet decisions. We can listen before speaking, acknowledge another person’s contribution, and include someone whose presence is easily overlooked.
At your next gathering, notice who has had little chance to join the conversation. Ask a question that gives them room, while allowing them to choose how much to say. If you are thanked for shared work, name the others who helped.
These practices invite us to release the constant work of securing our own importance. We can entrust honor to God and pay more attention to loving the people beside us.
Ask Jesus to show you where the desire to be noticed has made you less attentive. His teaching can free your next interaction to be simpler, kinder, and more generous.
A prayer
Jesus, teach us humility that is honest and generous. Help us entrust our place to You, honor others freely, and welcome people with openhearted care. Amen.
