Lydia Opens Her Home After Receiving the Gospel
An open door can begin with an open heart. Lydia’s story brings the hearing of the Gospel and the welcome of other people into the same small scene.
The Lord opened her heart
(Acts 16:14, NIV, excerpt)
Paul speaks with women gathered at a place of prayer in Philippi. Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, responds as the Lord opens her heart to the message. After she and her household are baptized, she invites Paul and his companions to stay in her home.
Let welcome become a thoughtful response
Notice where the story begins: God at work as the message is heard. Lydia’s hospitality follows her response to the Gospel.
Consider how you can make space for another person with what is available to you. It might be a meal, a seat beside you at church, or time to explain something unfamiliar.
Ask what would actually help. Someone may welcome company; another person may appreciate a clear invitation with freedom to choose another time.
As you offer hospitality, keep receiving Christ’s care yourself. Read His Word, pray, and stay connected with people who encourage your faith. The welcome we share can grow from gratitude for the grace we have received.
A prayer
Lord, open our hearts to receive Your Word. Help us respond with faith and thoughtful generosity. Show us how to welcome people with dignity, attention, and practical care, and keep our homes and conversations centered on Your love. Amen.
