Matthew 5:3 in Context: Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit

Some days make us painfully aware that we do not have everything together. Jesus begins the Beatitudes by meeting us there.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Read it in context

Jesus opens the Sermon on the Mount by naming the people His kingdom calls blessed. “Poor in spirit” describes those who know their spiritual need and come to God without pretending they can save themselves.

What Scripture says

The kingdom is received, not achieved. Jesus welcomes empty hands, honest dependence, and hearts ready to receive His mercy.

Carry it into today

Bring God the part of you that feels insufficient today. Then notice someone else who may need the gentleness you have received. We belong to a kingdom where need is met with grace and people help carry one another.

A prayer

Jesus, I come with empty hands. Teach me to depend on Your mercy, receive Your kingdom with humility, and welcome others with the grace You have shown me. Amen.
