Black brush lettering on ivory handmade paper: “God gives His people the Spirit’s help to follow Jesus.”

What Jesus Gives Us in the Holy Spirit

Following Jesus includes moments when we feel our need for help very clearly. We need patience to obey, courage to speak truth, and understanding as we listen to His Word.

he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever

(John 14:16, NIV, excerpt)

Before His death, Jesus told His disciples that the Father would give them another Advocate, the Spirit of truth. He joined this promise with the call to love Him and keep His commands. He also told those first disciples that the Spirit would teach them and remind them of what He had said. His coming departure was held together with the promise of God’s continuing presence and help.

Ask for help to follow Jesus today

The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to His people. We can ask for His help as we receive the testimony about Jesus and learn to obey.

Begin with one situation before you. You may need gentleness in a conversation or courage to do something right. Bring that need to God in a simple prayer. Read Scripture with a willing heart, and consider what obedience looks like there.

Stay connected with believers who can help you understand the Word and encourage faithful choices. God’s care reaches us within the life of His people as well as in quiet prayer.

Jesus calls us to love Him with our lives. We can depend on the help God gives as we take the next step.

A prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help us receive Your Word, love Jesus, and follow His commands with faith and willing hearts. Amen.
