When Your Child Asks a Question About God
A question about God can arrive between bites of breakfast or just as you turn out the light. Sometimes you know how to answer. Sometimes you need a little time.
You can begin by listening closely to what your child is asking.
In the future, when your son asks you,

Moses prepares Israel's parents for questions about God's commands. Their answer is to include the story of God's rescue from slavery in Egypt and the life of obedience He called them to afterward. The child is invited to understand God's commands within the story of His saving work.
Turn toward Scripture together
Ask, “What made you wonder about that?” A child may be curious about a word, concerned about a person, or trying to understand something they heard. Their answer can help you respond to the question they actually have.
When you know a relevant passage, read a manageable portion together and explain it simply. When you are unsure, say so honestly. You can look together or ask a trusted pastor, then return to the conversation.
As Christians, we can tell our children what God has done through the death and resurrection of Jesus and how His grace shapes the way we live. Keep making room for both understanding and faithful response.
One attentive conversation is a worthwhile place to begin. You can thank your child for asking and invite them to keep bringing their questions.

Father, help me listen with patience and speak with care. Give our family a growing understanding of Your Word and a love for Jesus that shapes our everyday lives. Amen.
