A Prayer Before Your Family Travels

Before a family sets out, there are bags to gather and details to remember. A short prayer can help everyone pause and place the journey before the Lord.

My help comes from the Lord,

(Psalm 121:2, NIV, excerpt)

Psalm 121 is a song of ascents that looks to the Maker of heaven and earth for help. It describes the Lord as the watchful keeper of Israel, attentive through day and night. The psalm directs the traveler’s trust toward God’s enduring care.

Prepare thoughtfully and pray together

You can read the psalm before leaving and invite each person to name something they would like prayer for. A child may feel excited, uncertain, or both. Listen and help them express it simply.

Bring the practical parts of the journey into your preparation: a suitable plan, necessary supplies, time for rest, and attention to the needs of those traveling with you. Shared responsibilities can make room for patient care.

Then pray for protection, wisdom, and kindness along the way. Remember the people who will help you travel and those you hope to see.

Following Jesus includes the way we treat one another in unfamiliar places and changing plans. Ask for patience in a delay, consideration in shared spaces, and gratitude for help received. The journey can become another place to practice a life of trust and love.

Father, we place this journey before You. Please protect and guide us. Help us prepare wisely, travel attentively, and treat others with kindness. Keep our hearts turned toward Jesus wherever we go. Amen.
