Black brush lettering on ivory handmade paper: “We can bring uncertain decisions to God with hearts ready to follow Him.”

A Prayer Before Making a Decision

Some decisions leave you circling the same questions. You can see reasons on both sides, and you want to choose faithfully. James gives us a place to begin: bring that need for wisdom to God.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,

(James 1:5, NIV, excerpt)

James writes about believers growing in perseverance through trials. Within that setting, he invites those who lack wisdom to ask a generous God. He also calls them to trust the Lord wholeheartedly, describing divided allegiance as instability. Wisdom belongs within a life that is ready to follow God.

Ask with a willingness to follow

Try putting the decision into one sentence. Then ask what Scripture already makes clear about honesty, love, responsibility, and obedience to Jesus. Those truths can guide the way you consider the options.

Gather the information you need. Listen to people with relevant knowledge and mature Christian judgment. Write down the responsibilities each choice would involve, including its effect on others.

You can bring what remains uncertain into prayer. Ask God to expose selfish motives, deepen your trust, and help you act on the wisdom available. You are allowed to take a careful next step while continuing to learn. A teachable heart has room to receive guidance along the way.

A prayer

Generous Father, I need Your wisdom. Help me trust You wholeheartedly, listen well, and choose in a way that honors Jesus. Give me patience to learn and courage to follow what is right. Amen.
