Being a Friend Who Can Keep a Confidence
A friend tells you something personal. The conversation may be brief, but the trust placed in your hands deserves thoughtful attention long after it ends.

Proverbs 11 contrasts speech that harms neighbors with the restraint of an understanding person. It describes trustworthiness in handling a confidence and also values wise guidance. The surrounding concern is a community shaped by integrity and careful use of words.
Be clear about how you will care for what is shared
Listen without turning the conversation into a story about someone else. Ask whether your friend wants practical help, prayer, or simply a listening ear.
Seek permission before passing a personal detail to another person or a prayer group. Share only what is needed and agreed upon. A request for prayer can be offered without retelling someone’s whole experience.
If someone’s safety is at risk, involve appropriate help and share the information needed to protect them. Handle that step with care and as much clarity as the situation allows.
Bring your own words before Jesus. Ask Him to make you steady enough to resist gossip and wise enough to help responsibly. Trust grows through the repeated care of listening, respecting privacy, and doing what love requires.
A prayer
Jesus, help me receive another person’s trust with humility. Guard my words from gossip, give me wisdom about needed help, and teach me to respect what has been shared. Let my friendship offer truthful and dependable care. Amen.
