Making Room to Listen Before You Advise
A friend begins telling you what is happening, and a solution comes quickly to mind. Before you offer it, there may be more to hear. Careful listening can help you understand what would actually be useful.
The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge,
(Proverbs 18:15, NIV, excerpt)
Proverbs 18 warns against answering before listening and describes wise people as eager to gain understanding. These sayings invite patient attention. Good judgment grows as we seek the information needed to respond responsibly.
Ask one more honest question
You might begin with, “What has been the hardest part?” or, “Would it help to talk this through together?” Then let the answer guide you. Some people need practical ideas; others first need time to explain the situation fully.
Reflect back what you understood and give your friend room to clarify. If you offer advice, be honest about the limits of your experience. For matters requiring professional knowledge, help them find someone qualified to assist.
As followers of Jesus, we can bring patient love into these conversations. A friend’s trust deserves attention, discretion, and an answer shaped by their actual needs.
After listening, ask what support would be welcome. You may be able to pray together, help with a task, or return to the conversation later. Offer something you can follow through on, and let care continue beyond the first exchange.
A prayer
Jesus, help me listen with patience and love. Give me understanding before I offer advice, humility about what I know, and willingness to respond in a useful way. Make me a trustworthy friend. Amen.
