Making Room for Friendships Across Generations
We often find friends among people whose days look like ours. Similar schedules and shared stages of life make conversation easy.
There may also be someone older or younger at church whom you would enjoy knowing, if you had a place to begin.
One generation commends your works to another;
(Psalm 145:4, NIV, excerpt)
Psalm 145 praises God's greatness, compassion, righteousness, and enduring reign. In the middle of that praise, one generation tells another about His works. Remembering and speaking of God's goodness becomes something His people share across the years.
Begin with a conversation
You might ask, “Is there a passage of Scripture you return to often?” Give the person room to answer in their own way. Be willing to share what you are learning too.
Friendship can grow through ordinary time together: a conversation after church, an invitation to lunch, or serving alongside one another. Look for mutual interests, and let the relationship develop naturally.
Age gives us different experiences to bring, and each person still deserves to be known individually. Listen with curiosity, read Scripture together, and keep directing your attention toward the God whose faithfulness you are discussing.
For families, these friendships can give children more people who help them know and love Jesus. For anyone, they can widen the circle of people with whom we pray, learn, and give thanks.
A prayer
Father, open our hearts to people in different seasons of life. Give us humility to listen, generosity to share, and joy in remembering Your goodness together through Jesus. Amen.
