Martha's Conversation With Jesus About Resurrection
Some questions reach all the way to the grave. Martha brings her grief and belief into a conversation with Jesus, and He meets her with a remarkable declaration about who He is.
I am the resurrection and the life.
(John 11:25, NIV, excerpt)
Lazarus has been dead for four days when Jesus arrives. Martha speaks with Him about her brother and the future resurrection. Jesus directs her hope toward Himself. She responds by confessing that He is the Messiah, the Son of God.
Let hope rest in the person of Jesus
Read their conversation slowly. Martha is able to speak plainly, and Jesus gives her something substantial to hold: His identity and His promise of life to those who believe in Him.
When you remember someone who has died, you can bring both love and sorrow into prayer. Christian hope has its foundation in the Savior who Himself rose from the dead.
Consider reading this passage with a trusted believer. There can be comfort in hearing Christ’s words aloud while someone sits beside you, without needing to fill every silence.
Today, let your prayer be simple and personal. Tell Jesus where you need help trusting Him, and return to what He has revealed about Himself.

Jesus, resurrection and life, help me place my hope in You. Meet those who are grieving with truthful comfort and caring people. Deepen our faith in Your saving work and Your victory over death. Amen.
