Nehemiah Prays Before He Answers
In the middle of a conversation with the king, Nehemiah prayed. He had been asked what he wanted, and before giving his answer, he turned toward God.
Then I prayed to the God of heaven,

This brief prayer follows the sustained prayer recorded in Nehemiah 1. In chapter 2, Nehemiah explains his concern for Jerusalem and makes specific requests. His account holds dependence on God together with thoughtful preparation and action.
Bring an important conversation before God
Before a conversation, take time to pray about the person, the purpose, and your own motives. Ask Jesus for truthful words and a listening heart.
Think through what you need to communicate. Gather relevant information and consider the questions the other person may reasonably ask.
During the conversation, remain attentive. A brief inward prayer can express dependence on God while you listen and respond.
Afterward, follow through on what you have agreed to do. Give thanks for help received and seek wisdom about any next steps. Let prayer accompany preparation, speech, and responsible action.

God of heaven, guide our important conversations. Through Jesus, give us careful preparation, truthful speech, and patient attention. Help us depend on You as we listen, answer, and follow through. Amen.
