Psalm 1: Making Room for God's Word to Shape You

What we return to matters. Psalm 1 opens the prayer book of Scripture by asking us to consider the direction of our lives and the words we allow to guide them.

whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

(Psalm 1:2, NIV, excerpt)

The psalm contrasts a life shaped by God’s instruction with a path shaped by wickedness. A well-watered tree pictures the steadiness and fruitfulness of receiving His teaching. The closing verses take our choices seriously before the Lord’s judgment.

Choose a truth to return to

Read the whole psalm, including its warning and its invitation. Ask God to help you recognize influences that encourage contempt, dishonesty, or disregard for others.

Choose a short passage of Scripture to read attentively during the week. Let its actual meaning become familiar before deciding how it applies.

You might keep a simple note with two questions: “What does this teach me about God? What faithful response does it call for?” Return to the passage as ordinary decisions arise.

As followers of Jesus, we receive His grace and learn His way. Ask a trusted believer to read with you if that would help. A shared conversation can encourage both understanding and faithful action.

A prayer

Father, grow my delight in Your Word. Help me turn from what draws me toward sin and receive what teaches me Your way. Through Jesus, shape my choices into a life of faithful love. Amen.
