Ruth's Faithful Care Along an Uncertain Road

Ruth’s story gives us a moment of love expressed through a decision. As Naomi prepared to return to Bethlehem, Ruth chose to go with her and to identify herself with Naomi’s people and God.

but Ruth clung to her.

(Ruth 1:14, NIV, excerpt)

Both women had been widowed, and Naomi urged her daughters-in-law to return to their own families. Ruth remained determined to accompany her. The chapter records their journey together while allowing Naomi to speak honestly about her grief.

Offer companionship with care

Read the story with attention to both women. Notice Ruth’s commitment and Naomi’s need to give words to sorrow.

In your own relationships, consider what dependable companionship might look like. Ask what kind of contact or help would be welcome.

Make an offer you can keep: a visit, regular check-in, shared meal, or help with a practical task. Listen when the person tells you what serves them.

Bring the relationship to Jesus in prayer. Ask for patient love and wisdom about your responsibilities. Alongside the care of a wider community, faithful companionship can help someone face an unfamiliar season with support.

A prayer

Lord, teach us to love with patience and dependable care. Help us listen honestly and offer support wisely. Through Jesus, strengthen the relationships and communities where people can receive companionship in a difficult season. Amen.
