10 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Children
There are days when praying for our children comes easily. We know exactly what we want to ask God for.
Then there are days when our minds are tired, our fears are loud and we cannot seem to find the words.
That is one reason I am so grateful for Scripture. We do not have to build every prayer from nothing. God has already given us words that remind us who He is, what matters most and what we can faithfully ask Him to do in the lives of our children.
These prayers are not about raising children who never struggle. They are prayers for children who know where to turn when they do.
1. Pray that God will bless and keep them
Read Numbers 6:24–26
Father, thank You for entrusting this child to me. Please bless them and keep them. Let Your face shine upon them and give them peace. Be near in every place I cannot go and every moment I cannot see. Help them recognize Your care and learn to rest beneath it.
2. Pray that they will know God is with them
Read Isaiah 41:10
Lord, when my child is afraid, remind them that they are not alone. Give them courage rooted in Your presence rather than their own strength. Hold them steady when life feels uncertain and teach them to look for You in the middle of what scares them.
3. Pray that they will trust God with their whole heart
Read Proverbs 3:5–6
Father, teach my child to trust You even when they do not understand. Keep them from believing they must figure everything out alone. Direct their steps, shape their decisions and help them follow You with an open and willing heart.
4. Pray that God’s peace will guard them
Read Philippians 4:6–7
Lord, when worry begins to fill my child’s mind, teach them to bring it to You. Help our home become a place where prayer is our first response, not our last resort. Guard their heart and mind with the peace that only You can give.
5. Pray that they will find refuge in God
Read Psalm 91:1–4
Father, be my child’s refuge. When the world feels loud, uncertain or unsafe, draw them close to You. Help them know that they can come to You honestly with every fear, question, hurt and need and find faithful love waiting for them.
6. Pray that God will give them wisdom
Read James 1:5
Lord, give my child wisdom for the choices in front of them. Teach them to seek what is true instead of what is popular, easy or immediately rewarding. Place wise people around them and give them humility to listen, learn and ask for help.
7. Pray that the fruit of the Spirit will grow in them
Read Galatians 5:22–23
Holy Spirit, grow in my child what I cannot manufacture for them: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Keep shaping their character when no one is watching. Make their life look more and more like Jesus.
8. Pray that they will understand Christ’s love
Read Ephesians 3:16–19
Jesus, root my child deeply in Your love. Let them know that their worth is not determined by achievement, appearance, approval or failure. Help them understand how wide and long and high and deep Your love is, and let that truth become the foundation beneath everything else.
9. Pray that God will use every part of their story
Read Romans 8:28–29
Father, take every part of my child’s life: the beautiful parts, the difficult parts, the answered prayers and the things we still do not understand. Use it all to make them more like Jesus. Redeem what hurts. Strengthen what is weak. Waste nothing entrusted to You.
10. Pray that they will truly know Jesus
Read Ephesians 1:17–18
Above every other hope I carry for my child, Lord, let them know You.
Open the eyes of their heart. Help them understand the hope of the gospel, trust in Jesus for themselves and walk with Him throughout their life. Give them a faith that is more than borrowed words or family tradition. Make it living, rooted, honest and their own.
A prayer to keep close
Father,
Thank You for the children You have placed in my care.
Bless them and keep them. Give them wisdom, courage, peace and hearts that recognize Your voice. Protect them from what would draw them away from You, and surround them with people who will speak truth and grace into their lives.
When they are afraid, remind them that You are near. When they fail, lead them toward repentance and the mercy of Jesus. When they succeed, keep them humble. When they hurt, be their refuge. When they wander, pursue them.
Help me love them faithfully without trying to take Your place. Give me wisdom to know when to speak, when to listen, when to hold on and when to place them back into Your hands.
Most of all, let them know and love Jesus.
