The Joy of Finding One Lost Coin
Some good news deserves company. You hear it, feel the relief or gladness, and immediately want to tell someone who will understand why it matters.
Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.
(Luke 15:9, NIV, excerpt)
Jesus described a woman searching carefully for a missing silver coin. She lit a lamp, swept the house, and kept looking. When she found it, she invited friends and neighbors to rejoice with her. Jesus connected her joy to the rejoicing in God’s presence over one sinner who repents. He was answering people who criticized His welcome of sinners.
Celebrate what heaven celebrates
Repentance is a hopeful turning toward God. Jesus’ parable teaches us to recognize that turning as cause for joy. One person matters enough for a celebration.
That can shape the atmosphere of a church, a friendship, or a home. When someone begins trusting Christ, asks to learn more about Him, or speaks honestly about turning from sin, we can respond with warmth and appropriate care.
Respect what they have chosen to share. A private conversation can stay private while you thank God in prayer. If they invite others into their joy, celebrate with them.
You might offer to read Scripture together, help them find a church community, or simply keep making time for friendship. There is something beautiful about a welcome that continues after the first conversation. We can share in the joy and help someone take the next step.
A prayer
Jesus, teach us to rejoice when people turn toward You. Give us attentive love for each person and help us offer a welcome that continues with faithful friendship. Amen.
