The Wisdom of Stepping Back From a Quarrel
A conversation can change direction when someone stops feeding the quarrel. Proverbs gives that restraint a place of honor and invites us to choose our response with care.
It is to one’s honor to avoid strife,
(Proverbs 20:3, NIV, excerpt)
This saying contrasts honorable restraint with a readiness to quarrel. Nearby proverbs commend insight and faithful conduct. Together they direct attention toward character that considers the consequences of a response.
Make room for a more useful conversation
Notice when the exchange has become a contest of repeated accusations or sharper replies. Pause before adding another sentence that only increases the heat.
You can say, “I want to understand this properly. Could we take a little time and return to the issue?” When a matter needs attention, agree on a responsible way to continue.
Use the pause to pray and identify what actually needs to be discussed. Separate the concern from the urge to win the moment.
Following Jesus includes both truthfulness and love. Ask a trusted person for help if the conversation needs support. A careful response can make more room for understanding, responsibility, and a peaceful way forward.
A prayer
Jesus, teach me to respond with truth and self-control. Help me recognize when my words are adding to a quarrel. Give me humility, wise support, and patience to address what matters with care. Amen.
