The Woman Who Poured Out Her Gratitude
Remembering mercy can soften the way we move through an ordinary day. It can make us more grateful, more attentive, and more willing to offer kindness to someone whose story we only partly know.
Your faith has saved you; go in peace.
(Luke 7:50, NIV, excerpt)
In Luke 7, a woman came to Jesus during a meal at Simon’s house. She wept at His feet and anointed them with perfume. Simon focused on her sinful reputation. Jesus told a story about two forgiven debts, then drew attention to the woman’s love. He declared her sins forgiven and sent her away in peace, affirming her faith.
Let gratitude have somewhere to go
Her love expressed the wonder of forgiveness. The passage invites us to consider Jesus’ authority to forgive and the grateful response His mercy awakens.
Take a few quiet minutes to thank Him specifically for His grace. You can acknowledge sin honestly, receive the Gospel with faith, and ask Him to deepen your love. There is room for both repentance and joy in that prayer.
Then let gratitude shape one ordinary interaction. Be patient with the person you are tempted to dismiss. Welcome someone whose presence others overlook. Offer a kindness without requiring them to explain their whole life first.
Simon needed help seeing the woman in front of him. We may need that help, too. The mercy we receive from Jesus can teach us to look at others with greater humility.
A prayer
Jesus, thank You for forgiving sinners and giving peace through faith in You. Deepen our gratitude, turn our hearts toward repentance, and let Your mercy shape our love. Amen.
