Treating the Person Who Works for You Fairly
When someone works under your direction, your choices affect their day. Clear expectations, attentive listening, and dependable follow-through can help make that responsibility a place of real care.
what is right and fair,
(Colossians 4:1, NIV, excerpt)
In the ancient setting of slavery, Paul addresses masters and requires them to act justly and fairly, remembering their own Master in heaven. His words place earthly power under God’s authority. A modern employer can take that accountability seriously when considering how workers are treated.
Look at one decision from the worker’s side
Choose a routine part of your work together: assigning a task, setting a deadline, arranging a schedule, or responding to a concern. Ask whether the expectations are clear and whether the person has what they need to carry them out.
Keep agreements and communicate changes responsibly. When a concern is raised, listen carefully and use the appropriate process to address it. Seek qualified guidance where an issue requires it.
Notice good work and give accurate credit. Make room for useful feedback about your own leadership.
Following Jesus includes the way authority is exercised. Ask Him for the humility to correct an unfair practice, the patience to hear a concern, and the wisdom to make decisions that respect the people involved.
A prayer
Lord Jesus, help me carry responsibility with humility. Show me where greater fairness or clarity is needed. Give me courage to make things right and wisdom to treat the people I lead with dependable care. Amen.
