When a Child Wonders Why We Give
A child watches you set something aside to give and asks why. That question can open a simple conversation about gratitude, another person’s needs, and the joy of sharing.
God loves a cheerful giver.

In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul encourages willing generosity for the needs of fellow believers. He points to God’s provision as help for good work and explains how giving leads to thanksgiving and praise. The passage connects generosity with grace, practical care, and the Gospel of Christ.
Connect the gift to a real need
Use an example your child can understand: “These groceries will help people have meals,” or, “We are helping our church provide something that is needed.” Keep the people receiving help dignified in the way you speak about them.
If your child would like to participate, offer an age-appropriate choice. They might help select a requested item, carry a small bag, or draw a cheerful card when one would be welcome. Explain what is useful before deciding together.
Talk about receiving help too. Families and communities care for one another as needs and resources change. Gratitude can grow on both sides of a gift.
Pray for the people involved and thank Jesus for His grace. Giving can become a practical way for children to learn that love pays attention and responds with what is available.
A prayer
Jesus, grow generosity in our family. Help us notice real needs, give willingly, and treat every person with dignity. Thank You for Your grace and for opportunities to share with our neighbors. Amen.
