When Jesus Notices a Generous Widow

A gift can look small from the outside while carrying a great deal of sacrifice. Jesus sees more than the size of an offering. He sees the person who gives it.

this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.

(Mark 12:43, NIV, excerpt)

In Mark 12, Jesus watched people giving at the temple. A poor widow put in two small coins, all she had to live on. He called His disciples’ attention to the cost of her gift. Just before this scene, He had warned about religious leaders who exploited widows while displaying their own importance. Reading the scenes together keeps our attention on both generosity and the care vulnerable people deserve.

Honor the person, and notice the need

This passage asks us to look more carefully. We can honor a person’s generosity while also attending to their circumstances. Someone who faithfully serves may need a meal, practical support, or another person willing to share the work.

Think of one person whose contribution is easy to overlook. Thank them specifically. Then ask a thoughtful question about how they are doing, leaving room for an honest answer.

If you help organize a ministry, consider whose needs are being heard. Make it easy for people with little money to belong and receive care. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity.

Jesus’ attention helps us build communities where gifts are received with gratitude and people are cared for with love.

A prayer

Lord Jesus, give us Your attentive eyes. Teach us generous hearts and help us honor, protect, and care for people whose needs may be easy to miss. Amen.
