When Jesus Sends His Friends Out Together

It can help to have someone beside you when you begin something unfamiliar. A shared task gives you another person to pray with, learn from, and encourage along the way.

Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

In Luke 10, Jesus appointed seventy-two others and sent them ahead of Him two by two. He told them to pray for workers, depend on the welcome they received, care for the sick, and announce the nearness of God’s kingdom. This was a particular mission under His direction, carried out in dependence on the Lord who sent them.

Find a faithful way to serve together

As we read, we can notice the shared work and prayer at the heart of this scene. Jesus’ people were sent with a message about His kingdom and with companions for the road.

Ask someone in your church about a need you could help meet together. Perhaps there is a welcome team to join, a practical outreach to support, or a neighbor who would appreciate company.

Before you begin, pray for the people you will meet. Talk about what each of you can responsibly offer. Afterward, make time to listen to each other and thank God for the opportunity.

Serving together can help us grow in humility. We learn from someone else’s gifts, receive correction, and remember that the work belongs to Jesus.
