When the Day Feels Overwhelming
Some days feel louder than others.
The headlines are heavy. The needs around us feel endless. Our thoughts race toward everything that could happen next.
Psalm 46 begins with upheaval: the earth giving way, mountains falling into the sea, and nations in turmoil. Right there, in the middle of it, the psalm declares:
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1, NIV
That is the center of the psalm: God is refuge and strength. He is present with His people. Nations and kingdoms remain under His authority. He will be exalted.
“Be still, and know that I am God”
Later in the psalm, God says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” These words rise above war and the raging of nations with a declaration of who God is and where history is going: He will be exalted among the nations and in the earth.
When circumstances feel overwhelming, Psalm 46 gives us somewhere steady to look.
Faithful response
Bring fear to God in prayer. Read His Word. Care for the people in front of you. Ask for wisdom. Do the good that is yours to do, and remember that the God who is refuge and strength is still God over all of it.
A prayer for an overwhelming day
God, You are our refuge and strength. Steady us with Your presence. Give us wisdom for what is ours to do and trust in Your sovereign rule over what we cannot carry. Fix our eyes on Christ. Amen.
