How to Choose a Throw Blanket Size for Your Home

A blanket's name does not tell you how much it will cover. Use the measurements and the person or furniture it is for. A small keepsake blanket and an adult sofa throw can look similar in a close-up photograph.

Start with a real size comparison

The Modern Burlap XO recycled cotton throw lists these options. This is a guide to that product's size names, not a universal chart for every blanket.

30 x 40 inches: the Baby/Toddler option, a smaller textile for appropriate supervised uses and keepsakes.
42 x 48 inches: the Child option, useful to compare with a child's lap or reading space.
50 x 60 inches: the Throw option, a starting point for an adult chair or sofa blanket.
66 x 86 inches: the Twin option, for broader coverage. Measure the bed and desired overhang.

For a reading chair

Measure from where you want the blanket to reach at the shoulders or waist down to your feet. Decide whether you want to tuck it around your legs or simply lay it across your lap. A tall adult may want more length than a standard throw provides.

For a sofa

For everyday use, prioritize the person using it. For a folded accent, measure the sofa arm or back where it will sit. If two people will share it, compare the width against both people seated together.

For a bed

Measure the mattress width and length, then add the overhang you want on each side. A decorative fold at the foot of a bed needs different coverage from a blanket used across the entire mattress.

A size name is not infant safe-sleep guidance. Keep loose blankets out of an infant's sleep space and follow age-appropriate use instructions.

For a gift
