What to Give for a Baptism: Ideas for Babies, Children, and Adults

Choose a baptism gift for the person being baptized, not only for the occasion. A baby, an older child, and an adult will use very different things. Their family and church tradition should guide your choice.

For a baby

Ask the parents what would be welcome. A Scripture textile, family keepsake, or children's Bible they have chosen can mark the day. Add the baby's name and baptism date to a separate card so the memory remains with the gift.

For a child or teenager

A readable Bible in the translation their church uses, a journal, or a personal letter may fit better than nursery decor. If you choose a Bible, check whether they already have one and whether the print size and reading level work for them.

For an adult

Consider a Bible they want to read, a notebook for questions and prayer, or a useful home piece carrying a passage that matters to them. Your ongoing friendship may be more valuable than a formal commemorative object.

Keep the focus on Christ

Romans 6:1-11 connects baptism with Christ's death and resurrection and the call to walk in newness of life. Read it with care and honor how the recipient's church teaches about baptism. A gift should not turn the day into a promise of an easy life or guaranteed success.

A note to adapt

“We are thankful to share this day with you. We pray that you will grow in knowing Jesus, find faithful people to walk beside you, and keep returning to His grace and truth. We are glad to be part of your life.”

For a baby, address the parents and describe the care you hope to offer the family. For an older recipient, write directly to them.

When you are unsure

Ask one specific question: “Would you prefer a Bible, a keepsake for the home, or something on your list?” That leaves room for a personal gift while respecting what they already own.
