Black hand-lettered artwork on ivory handmade paper: An honest apology can be a small beginning of repair.

Helping Your Child Offer an Honest Apology

Your child has hurt someone's feelings, and the words “I'm sorry” come out quickly. You want to help them understand what those words are for.

An apology is a chance to practice honesty, care, and a different next step.

Do not lie to each other,

(Colossians 3:9, NIV, excerpt)

Paul writes this to believers whose lives are being renewed in Christ. He calls them to leave dishonest and harmful ways behind and put on kindness, patience, and love. The forgiveness they have received from the Lord shapes how they treat one another.

Help them say what happened

One way to apply this at home is to give a child simple language for taking responsibility: “I took your toy without asking. That was wrong. I'm sorry.” Use words they understand, and make room to hear how the other person was affected.

Then consider what can be put right. They might return the toy, help rebuild what was knocked down, or ask permission next time. Let the response fit the harm and the child's understanding.

We can model the same honesty: “I spoke harshly. I was wrong, and I am sorry.” Children need opportunities to see adults receive correction and seek forgiveness too.

Keep pointing them toward Jesus, who forgives sin and teaches us to love. Patient practice can help an apology become more thoughtful and the next choice more considerate.

A prayer

Jesus, help us tell the truth about our actions and receive Your mercy. Give our family humility to apologize, wisdom to put things right, and love that keeps learning. Amen.
