When Joy and Sorrow Are Both Here

There are seasons when joy comes easily, and seasons when sorrow feels close.

Nehemiah 8 records a day when God’s people heard the Law, wept, and were then called to celebrate because the day was holy to the Lord.

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Nehemiah 8:10, NIV

Scripture gives us room for both grief and joy. Jesus wept. The Psalms lament. Paul described himself as “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing” in 2 Corinthians 6:10. First Peter speaks of believers rejoicing in Christ even while grieved by trials.

Christian joy has a deeper foundation than changing circumstances: God Himself and the salvation believers have in Christ.

When you grieve, bring that grief honestly to God. When He gives good gifts, receive them with thanksgiving. Joy and sorrow can both be real in the same season.
