10 Bible Verses for Grief and Loss + A Prayer

Grief can make the world feel unfamiliar. It can arrive through death, miscarriage, estrangement, illness, a changed future, or the loss of something you cannot easily explain.

Scripture does not rush sorrow. It gives us words for lament, shows us the compassion of Jesus, and holds grief inside the larger hope of God. These passages are not shortcuts around pain. They are places to rest within it.

10 Bible verses for grief and loss

1. Psalm 34:18: God is near

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”

Grief often feels lonely. This verse does not explain the loss; it names God’s nearness to the person carrying it.

2. John 11:35: Jesus wept

“Jesus wept.”

Jesus entered the sorrow of people He loved. Tears are not a failure of faith, even when resurrection hope is real.

3. Psalm 147:3: care for wounded hearts

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Healing is often slow and uneven. God’s care is not limited to the moment everyone else expects you to be “better.”

4. Matthew 5:4: comfort for those who mourn

Jesus makes room for mourning. The kingdom of God does not require sorrow to be hidden.

5. Lamentations 3:22–23: mercy for this morning

Lamentations speaks from devastation, yet remembers that the Lord’s compassion does not fail. In grief, “new every morning” may mean receiving enough mercy for one ordinary hour at a time.

6. Isaiah 43:2: God with us through deep waters

Isaiah’s image is passage through waters and fire, not avoidance of them. The promise is God’s presence with His people in what feels overwhelming.

7. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4: comfort that becomes care

Paul calls God the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. The comfort we receive can make us gentler companions to others without turning their pain into a lesson.

8. Romans 8:38–39: love that loss cannot sever

Romans 8 declares that death, life, the present, the future, and every created power cannot separate believers from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

9. 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14: grief with hope

Paul does not tell Christians not to grieve. He distinguishes grief held by resurrection hope from grief that has nowhere beyond the grave to look.

10. Revelation 21:4: sorrow will not have the final word

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes.”

Christian hope looks toward the day death and mourning are no more. Until then, every tear matters to God.

How to use Scripture while grieving

• Choose one passage. Keep it nearby rather than pressuring yourself to read a large amount.
• Pray honestly. The Psalms make room for confusion, anger, longing, and silence.
• Accept practical care. Meals, childcare, counseling, sleep, and company are not less spiritual than words.
• Release the timeline. Grief does not move neatly, and anniversaries can reopen what seemed quiet.
• Seek support when you need it. A pastor, grief counselor, support group, or health professional can help you carry what feels too heavy alone.

A prayer in grief

Father of compassion, meet me in this sorrow. Hold what I cannot put into words. Give me strength for today, people who will stay near, and mercy for the moments that feel especially heavy. Keep my eyes on Jesus, who wept and who conquered death. Hold me in Your love and in the hope of resurrection. Amen.

For someone supporting a grieving person

You do not need a perfect explanation. Say their loved one’s name. Offer one specific form of help. Remember the difficult dates. Keep showing up after the first wave of attention has passed.
