Jesus Gives His Mother Into a Disciple's Care
Care becomes especially meaningful when it continues beyond a moment of concern. Someone needs a place in our attention, our plans, and the practical life we share.
Here is your mother.
(John 19:27, NIV, excerpt)
John tells us that Jesus’ mother and the disciple He loved stood near the cross. Jesus spoke to each of them, entrusting His mother to the disciple’s care. From that time, the disciple took her into his home. In the account of Christ’s suffering, we see this particular act of attentive love for His mother.
Give care a place in your plans
This scene invites us to linger over Jesus’ love. He saw His mother and made a concrete provision for her care.
Think of someone who could use steady support. A parent, an older member of your church, or a neighbor may appreciate a regular call, help arranging a task, or company at a meal. Ask what would be useful rather than deciding for them.
If the need is ongoing, talk with others who can share the responsibility. Agree on something realistic and follow through. Consistent care often grows from small arrangements made thoughtfully.
We can also be people who notice when a caregiver needs help. A practical offer can support both the person receiving care and the one giving it. Love has a way of becoming more tangible when we make room for it in our plans.
A prayer
Jesus, thank You for the love You showed Your mother. Help us notice ongoing needs, share responsibility wisely, and offer steady care with humility and tenderness. Amen.
