Learning to Celebrate Someone Else's Good News
A friend shares good news, and you want to meet it with love. Sometimes joy comes easily. Sometimes it arrives beside a longing of your own. You can bring both your heart and your response before God.
Rejoice with those who rejoice;
(Romans 12:15, NIV, excerpt)
Romans 12 describes sincere love within a life offered to God. Paul calls believers to share in one another’s joy and sorrow, live humbly, and pursue peace. Rejoicing together is part of that attentive care for another person’s real experience.
Give their joy your attention
Ask a question that lets your friend tell you more. “What are you most excited about?” or “How can I celebrate with you?” can make room for a meaningful conversation.
If their news touches something tender in you, you can acknowledge that feeling privately with the Lord or a trusted person. Ask Jesus for help to offer sincere kindness in the moment. A thoughtful message or a simple word of congratulations may be enough to begin.
Think of a small way to share their happiness: remember the date, ask how the first day went, or help with a practical part of the celebration.
Christian love makes room for a neighbor’s joys as well as their burdens. We can learn to notice what matters to someone else and meet it with generous attention.
A prayer
Jesus, help me receive another person’s good news with love. Tend to the longings in my own heart, and teach me to celebrate with sincerity. Give our friendships room for shared joy and faithful care. Amen.
