Paul and Silas Pray in the Middle of the Night
The prison is still a prison when Paul and Silas begin to pray and sing. Before the night’s remarkable events unfold, their attention is already turned toward God.

After being beaten and imprisoned, Paul and Silas worship at midnight. An earthquake opens the prison, and Paul intervenes to protect the jailer’s life. They proclaim Jesus to his household. The night continues with faith, baptism, care for their wounds, and a shared meal.
Give the night a place for prayer
Read the account as a whole and notice how worship, the Gospel, and care for another person meet within it. Jesus remains the center of the message Paul and Silas share.
If you are awake with a concern, you can speak plainly to God. A familiar hymn or a short prayer may help you turn your attention toward Him.
Consider asking a trusted friend to pray with you at an appropriate time. Receiving company and practical support can be part of how a church cares through difficult days.
Hold your circumstances before the Lord and ask for the grace to respond faithfully within them. Even a few honest words can become a prayer directed toward Him.
A prayer
Father, receive the prayers we bring in the night. Keep our attention on Jesus and give us faithful help for the circumstances before us. Make our churches places of truthful hope, practical care, and shared prayer. Amen.
