Remembering God's Faithfulness on a Birthday
A birthday gives us a moment to pause and give thanks. Alongside the celebration, we can remember the life God has given and ask for wisdom in the days ahead.
Teach us to number our days,
(Psalm 90:12, NIV, excerpt)
Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses that places human life before the everlasting God. It acknowledges our brief lives and our sin, then asks for compassion, gladness, and wisdom. The prayer turns toward God’s enduring love and the work He gives His people to do.
Remember with gratitude and look ahead with prayer
Choose one or two things for which you can honestly thank God from the past year. They might include a person’s care, something learned, or help received. Let the gratitude be specific and fitting for the person celebrating.
Then ask a gentle question about the year ahead: what would you like to learn, practice, or offer in service to someone else? A child may name a small skill or an act of kindness. An adult may want to pray about a responsibility or relationship.
Bring those hopes before Jesus together. Ask Him to guide the person’s growth in faith, wisdom, and love.
You might write the prayer in a birthday card. Keep the words personal to what you truly know about the recipient. A celebration can hold both gladness for today and a humble trust in the Lord for what comes next.
A prayer
Father, thank You for this life and the days You have given. Teach us wisdom, satisfy us with Your love, and guide the work before us. Help us follow Jesus with grateful, willing hearts. Amen.
