Returning to Jesus in Everyday Life

Have you ever reached the end of a full day and realized you barely noticed the person you were trying to care for? You handled the meal, the schedule, and the details, but the conversation slipped past.

It can happen in our life with Jesus, too. We can fill a day with good intentions and leave little room to listen to Him.

In Luke 10, Martha welcomes Jesus into her home. While she becomes distracted by the preparations, Mary sits at His feet and listens. Martha asks Jesus to send her sister to help. He answers her concern and affirms Mary's attention to Him: “Mary has chosen what is better” (Luke 10:42, NIV).

That moment invites us to receive His teaching with the same attention. Earlier in the chapter, Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan and calls for active mercy. Listening to Him can shape the way we serve: with attention, compassion, and a willing response to His words.

A prayer for an attentive heart

Jesus, help me make room for Your words today. Show me where distraction has crowded out attention to You. Teach me to receive Your correction and follow Your lead. Let what I hear in Scripture shape the way I speak, serve, and love. Amen.

Carry one thing into the day

Read Luke 10:38–42. Ask what the passage shows about Jesus and what response it invites from you. You might put your phone aside while you read, or ask someone in your household to join you. Then carry that attention into one conversation, giving the person in front of you time to be heard.
