Made for Good Works

A meal left at the door. A patient answer to a child. An offer to stay and help clean up. Much of the good we can do begins with noticing a person and responding to a real need.

Ephesians 2 gives that ordinary kindness a deeper foundation. Paul describes how God, rich in mercy, makes people alive with Christ. Salvation comes by grace through faith: “it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8, NIV).

Then verse 10 describes believers as God's handiwork, created in Christ for good works. Grace is the beginning; a changed life grows from what God has done. Our service becomes a response of gratitude to Jesus.

Later in the chapter, Paul describes people brought near through Christ's blood and joined together in God's household. This life of love has room for giving and receiving. We belong among people who can pray with us, share a task, and help us follow Jesus.

A prayer for willing hands

Jesus, thank You for saving us by grace. Open my eyes to the people around me. Help me respond with humility, generosity, and care. Show me a useful way to serve, and make me grateful when someone offers kindness to me. Amen.

Make the offer specific

Think of someone you could help this week. Ask, “Would dinner on Thursday be helpful?” or offer another task you can realistically do. Listen to what they need, respect their answer, and follow through on what you promise. A small act of care can become a welcome expression of love.
