The Courage of the Hebrew Midwives

Pharaoh oppresses the Israelites and orders the Hebrew midwives to kill newborn boys. Shiphrah and Puah refuse to carry out his command because they fear God. Exodus records their protection of life within the larger story of God’s people in Egypt.

Take time with the seriousness of this account. Their obedience to God has a concrete expression: preserving lives placed in their care.
For readers today, their courage encourages attention to people who are vulnerable. Consider where a child, an older neighbor, or someone with limited support needs responsible help.
Work with trustworthy people and appropriate services when protection is needed. Learn the safeguards that apply to a role you already hold, and take them seriously.
Ask God for courage to choose what is good when pressure makes it difficult. In following Jesus, compassion can become a practical commitment to another person’s dignity and well-being, carried out with wisdom and faithful support.

Holy God, give us hearts that honor You and courage to protect those who need care. Help us act wisely, work with trustworthy people, and take our responsibilities seriously. Shape our compassion through the love of Jesus. Amen.
