The Hope of Jesus Returning
Some words are worth returning to because they hold us close to what is certain. Paul gave a grieving church words about Jesus, resurrection, and a future together with their Lord.
And so we will be with the Lord forever.
(1 Thessalonians 4:17, NIV, excerpt)
The Thessalonian believers needed to understand what would happen to those who had died in Christ. Paul grounded his answer in Jesus’ death and resurrection. He described the Lord’s return, the rising of the dead in Christ, and His people being gathered together with Him. Then he told them to encourage one another with these words.
Share hope with tenderness
The heart of this hope is being with Jesus. Those who belong to Him can look toward a future secured by the Savior who died and rose again.
Read this passage slowly, perhaps with someone from your church. Give room for both sorrow and gratitude. You can name the comfort of Christ’s promise without rushing the person beside you.
If a friend is grieving, ask what would feel helpful today. A quiet visit, a shared meal, or a prayer may be welcome. If they would like Scripture, offer this passage gently and let them respond in their own time.
We can keep encouraging one another with the hope Paul shared. The Lord who rose will return, and His people will be with Him. That promise is precious enough to carry with care.
A prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the promise of life with You. Comfort Your grieving people and teach us to share resurrection hope with tenderness, patience, and practical love. Amen.
